In March we will again be assisted by the re-enactors of Frontleven v.z.w. during our opening weekend, in and around the VF bunkers. In the last decade they succeeded in allowing many park and museum visitors to experience the site in a unique way, regularly helped by friends from home and abroad. We would of course like to thank them all for their support in turning the historic site into an “active” monument where history, often literally, comes to life!
During this “Living Museum” edition, there will also be demonstrations regarding the methods and devices the armies used for communication throughout the conflict. In addition to German soldiers, American soldiers will also be depicted, including a U.S. “mortar crew”, within the theme of the battle of “Hurtgen-Monschau”.

In this region with its forests full of German bunkers there was very heavy fighting and American soldiers also appreciated such sturdy shelters, especially if the alternative was a shallow hole dug in the frozen ground. Sometimes both parties sought shelter in the same place, as shown by the testimony of veteran Wesley Trindal, click here for the interview with this story.
Apart from the large SK1 museum bunker, the other (VF) bunkers, their temporary residents and the demonstrations can all be visited for free. As usual on our Living Museum editions we will be open on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 March from 10 am to 5 pm, hope to see you then!
