18/5: Oorlogserfgoed doorgrond

Want to take a look inside a Belgian bunker? In that case Haacht is the place to be on Sunday 18 May.

Long before there was any talk of their Atlantic Wall, the German troops themselves faced lines of bunkers of the Belgian army. Alarmed by the successes of the German tanks, shortly before their invasion on 10 May 1940, sometimes literally in the months before, anti-tank ditches were also added to the defence. Near Antwerp, more than 30 km ran from Fort Stabroek to Fort Oelegem, and were also added to the “KW” (Koningshooikt – Waver) line. Although the latter was only started in September 1939, more than 400 bunkers would be built by May 1940. More than 50 were located on the territory of Haacht, where 3.5 km of anti-tank ditch was also constructed. 85 years ago, it was finished just in time…

Thanks to the npo HO8 in Haacht, you can discover all this history and its remains in many ways. Those who would like to explore alone can choose from several walks, if you prefer to go with a guide, this is also possible.

More info can be found on this page by the municipality of Haacht and this page, also on the Belgium Battlefield of Europe website more can be found.
